Estimation of soil cracking and the effect on surface runoff in a Texas Blackland Prairie watershed

چکیده
Seasonal cracking of the soil matrix results in poor estimates of runoff and infiltration by simulation models due to the changing soil storage conditions. In this study, soil surface elevation changes were measured every two weeks and soil crack volume was calculated for a two-year period at the USDA-Agricultural Research Service, Riesel Y-2 watershed in central Texas. Soil anchors were placed in triplicate at depths of 0Ð15, 0Ð45, 0Ð90, 1Ð50 and 2Ð5 m and relative movement from a monument at 4Ð5 m was measured. Soil movement was translated into crack volume assuming isotrophic shrinkage. A crack flow model was developed for this study that computes crack volume from crack potential, soil depth and soil moisture. Simulated crack volume followed the seasonal trends found in the measured crack volume and was in general agreement with a regression R2 D 0Ð84. The crack model was incorporated into SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool), a comprehensive hydrologic model. Regression analysis was performed on measured and simulated daily surface runoff with an R2 D 0Ð87 indicating good agreement. The model was able to simulate surface runoff accurately in winter months when cracks were swelled closed and in the fall recharge events of 1998 when crack volume went from 70 to 10 mm. The relationships between measured crack volume and hydrologic variables simulated by the model were also examined and discussed. Copyright 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Surface runoff estimation in an upper watershed using geo-spatial based soil conservation service-curve number method
Runoff assessment and estimation is crucial for watershed management as it provides information that is needed to expedite the course of watershed planning and development. The most commonly used model due to its simplicity and versatility in runoff estimation is the soil conservation service curve number developed by the United States Department of Agriculture. The study estimates the surface ...
متن کاملHydrologic Response of a Small Watershed Model to Generated Precipitation
Watershed models such as SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) simulate water quality impacts of land and water resource management alternatives. To simulate these impacts, long-term daily rainfall data are necessary. In the absence of measured rainfall data, watershed models use weather generators to simulate rainfall events. The objective of this study is to examine several daily precipitatio...

Extended abstract 1- Introduction Soil erosion is the most important cause of land degradation and the cause of water loss, soil loss, sedimentation in water resources, and maximum flood intensification (Liu et al., 2019). Models are the most important tools for estimating and mapping of erosion at the watershed level. As the experimental models are dependent on used coefficients and region c...

متن کاملField data and flow system response in clay (vertisol) shale terrain, north central Texas, USA
The water budget in clay shale terrain is controlled by a complex interaction between the vertisol soil layer, the underlying fractured rock, land use, topography, and seasonal trends in rainfall and evapotranspiration. Rainfall, runoff, lateral flow, soil moisture, and groundwater levels were monitored over an annual recharge cycle. Four phases of soil–aquifer response were noted over the stud...
